okay.. I realize that I have a blog creating addiction... I've often wondered if I should scrap the whole thing and start all over...

I have the Frugal Vegan Blog which is supposed to be where I log my frugal ways, in hopes of sharing how I feed my food lovin' family without breaking the bank.

my DC Daily Photo Blog which was a great experiment for myself. I wasn't sure about blogging DAILY! (yikes) and sharing my pictures with the whole wide world .. but I did it. and it was fun, and a fantastic way of documenting our time in DC. But, alas, I no longer live in DC. I know there will be a new daily photo blog in my future, but I'm not sure I'm ready for it yet. Maybe...

& there's this Cre8in Blog which was my attempt to encourage, nurture and allow an outlet for my creative side. (as if that creativity can have only one side!) plus, I happen to love the way I used the 8 in cre8in. okay, i'm a geek. whatever.

and a few other private blogs that I've created for various reasons, all rooted in my desire to write more, to create more, and to keep a record (albeit a loose, fun, not so structured record) of this thing I call my life.

sooo... now, I've been busy with life, and have allowed myself to be a bit more scattered than I normally find comfortable. And, I'm wondering what I want to do with this blogging part of my personality.

I don't think I want to just dump it all. I think I'm ready to challenge myself. What better day to do this than today. On the first day of the second month of a new year. (it makes sense to me, even if it's just a bunch of babble to anyone 'out there')

So... I'll take a baby step here, and try to post every day for a week. I was going to say a month.. but that's just more of a commitment than I'm willing to make right now. WIth this 'everydayforaweek commitment' I plan to post to each of my blogs independently. I've been lazy and copied some of my posts to my different blogs.. (BLA BLA BOring.)

so.. this will be my last (for this week at least) duplicate post.

this is where I get serious.
(for a week anyway!) >> Sheesh.. I'm beginning to sound like commitmentphobic.

It certainly makes it easy to question whether schools have our children's best interests in mind. At least in this case, it's quite obvious they need to set the bar a bit higher.

I don't know how long the story will be online, so I'll past the text here. I applaud the Humane Society of the U.S. for investigating and sharing this information. Please try the link, but be forewarned, you shall see some disturbing footage.

Meat From 'Sick' Cows Could Have Been Sent to Schools

A nationwide animal abuse investigation and it all ends up in your child's school cafeteria.

The investigation showed a fork-lift being used to shove a “sick” cow into a slaughterhouse.

That video is now the focus of a USDA investigation into a meat company accused of supplying 'bad' meat to schools in 35 states— including Maryland.

Fox 5's Sherri Ly is following the school lunch scare.

Just a short time ago, the agriculture department released a letter saying it has indefinitely suspended the meat company involved from providing beef to its school lunch and federal food programs.

All this came after the Humane Society of the U.S. released disturbing video from a six week investigation.

Even more disturbing, the Humane Society says, is that meat from these potentially sick cows may have ended up in schools.

The Humane Society of the U.S. shot undercover video at a California meat packing plant and says workers routinely tortured downed or "sick" cows to get them on their feet so they could be slaughtered for human consumption.

The Humane Society says meat from this packing plant poses a potential health risk and goes to schools in 36 states through the National School Lunch Program – including Maryland.

Federal law bans downed cows in the human food supply because they may have a higher risk of e coli, salmonella contamination or mad cow disease.

The u-s-d-a says there is no immediate health risk but it is investigating.

The packing plant now says it fired two employees in this video and suspended a supervisor. In a statement the company president said “We are shocked and saddened by what we have seen today. Operations have been immediately suspended until we can meet with all of our employees and be assured these sorts of activities never again happen at our facility."

The Humane Society says what they found should worry everyone since an estimated 95% of Americans eat meat.

It's impossible to tell which schools may have gotten meat from this packing plant, because it's shipped to the state and not directly to schools.

The Maryland board of education today said it relies on the USDA to ensure food safety in schools and has no reason to believe there are any problems.

Parents in Virginia and the district do not have to worry as the Humane Society says they are not among the states or cities that receive meat through the federal lunch program.

My daugher has noticed that I've been spending a lot of time on cloth diapering sites lately. Things have changed a lot in the past 11 1/2 years since I first chose to try cloth diapering. I think when I mentioned it at the time, my mom (who cloth diapered all six of us) and my sisters thought I was a bit nutty. (but then, I get that a lot) So I started researching what is new in the cloth diapering community. One company in particular really stood out to both David and me. Gdiapers are a happy little marriage between cloth and disposable. It is a disposable insert in a breathable cloth diaper cover.

Gdiapers appeal to me on so many levels. First, you have this Australian couple, Jason and Kim Graham-Nye, who came to the realization that disposable diapers are the third largest contributer to landfills in the world. And those suckers take five hundred years to break down (to me that kinda takes the practicallity right out of the ease of disposablility!) So this couple decided to take that realization a step (or two or many) further! Gdiapers have been available in Australia since 1991. A couple of years ago, I'm happy to say, Jason and Kim bought the rights to the rest of the world and brought Gdiapers to America.

Like I said, I have been spending a lot of time researching cloth diapering options. There are many. And to be honest, when I first found out I was pregnant, I wasn't totally sure I'd go all the way cloth again. After the kids and I saw the video here which shows the biodegradablitiy of a gdiaper insert next to disposable diapers, I knew I really couldn't come up with an excuse that I could swallow. I mean, I want this world to be a better world for my kids. I don't believe in a disposable planet. I sent the link to David and he was sold in a second. Of course, I kept looking online for all sorts of cloth diapering options... my hubby and daughter had already decided Gdiapers was the way to go. (my son isn't all that interested, I mean, he is eleven, and we are talking about diapers here.)

As if the product itself isn't amazing enough. This company runs on the philosophy of being real and genuine with everyone you encounter. That is something I can stand behind!

I have been in contact with people from Gdiapers. They are very personalble and helpful. Michelle, from Gdiapers, is going to be in DC today. When she first contacted me I thought that was cool, but was pretty sure I'd have a very newborn baby in my hands and that I'd not feel up to meeting for lunch or anything. Well... that babe is still neatly contained and rather portable in my ever growing tum-tum... soooo I'm happy to say that I very shortly I shall be meeting Michelle and some other area gmums & gdads for lunch.

Who knows... maybe the baby was just waiting to be born to give me the chance to meet Michelle! =)

Realizing that the start of this little lemon is not the most exciting thing to any of you who might be reading this blog, I post it anyway. Why??? Because I'm darn proud of this little citrus fruit. This is from an indoor lemon tree that my friend gave to me. We had little lemon flowers which really are sweet, but I never expected fruit... nor do I know just how far this little guy will grow. Still, the kids and I are excitedly watching its progress.

Contrary to what it might appear by looking at that lovely blue sky, it was quite a hot, humid, typical DC Tourist season type of day. The thing that baffles me about this particular monument is why they built it out of granite making the temperature a full five degrees hotter than the rest of the mall.
According to this article in the Washington Post , "The combination of old age, fading health, profound emotion and high heat can be deadly. D.C. emergency responders said they are often called to treat heat-related episodes at the memorial"

But then, I don't really know why the height of tourist season in DC happens to be during the worst weather of the year!

Still, It is a stunning structure, located in between the Washington and Lincoln Monuments.

California doesn't actually have an embassy. This building is the University of California, Washington Center . When I said it was the University of California, my son misunderstood and said "THE EMBASSY OF CALIFORNIA????" which I thought was pretty funny.

Now, I won't even comment on the circular thing that sits atop of this building... but any visitor or resident of DC can tell you they are EVERYWHERE. The first time I saw one, I thought it interesting... now ... no comment.

Here's a sight a tad less pleasing to see. Actually, it helps be bring up something that really irks me about this city. WHY is it that in DC, when there is construction, they close off the sidewalk. In NYC and Los Angeles, and I'm sure other major cities, if a sidewalk is closed, room is made in the street to allow pedestrian traffic. Here, it's more of a 'fend for yourself you walking weirdos' sort of attitude.... or maybe that's just how I feel when I'm force to cross a street with my arms laden with heavy grocery bags.

This building is getting what a lot of buildings in the DC area get... a face lift. The base of this building is a Rite Aide drug store. I think the rest is just office buildings. It is interesting that this building and many near it are getting face lifts. What causes one building to update it's look and go 'modern' (what is modern anyway... who decides.. surely it's all objective anwyay) when so many new buildings are constructed taking great lengths to preserve the old face.

And do both types of construction take place merely to allow for owners to ask for increased rent?

I just think it is cool to live near the National Geographic Building . This must have something to do with the fact that National Geographic happens to be one of the organizations that inspired me as a young child, and continues to do so today. This view is looking up from across the street on the corners of Desales St. & 17th NW. Another thing I love about this museum is it is conveniently located in between the Faragut North Metro stop and my apartment. Knowing where the clean restrooms are located is a handy skill to have for any urban dweller... and a necessary skill for those of us that happen to be growing babies ;)

As a girl who was raised in southwest USA, I am always in awe of the tulips, daffodils and all the other bloomin' things around here. Each of the many cities in which we have lived have brought my attention to new and (to me) exciting things growing in the world at large. My daughter and I both stopped dead in our tracks to check out these bright little blossoms.

They just look like a little bit of sunshine to me!

The Carnegie Instution of Washington is on P & 16th Streets NW DC. This picture shows more blooming tulips. Unfortunately, the booms don't last long. In a weeks time the petals are stripped from the stems leaving them naked. Thankfully, other things will begin to bloom shortly! =)

Today we walked to Montrose Park in Georgetown. It is on R street & 38th st. It was a bit of a walk, but such a beautiful day for it! We made a quick detour to our favorite gelato place for sorbet... blood orange and grapefruit on a cone. YUM... absolutely fantastically refreshing!
The trees will soon be blooming and offer more shade for this little spot. Still, we found some and sat on the grass while the kids played. There was much swinging, running around and the maze. In the middle of this picture you can see a small gazebo like structure which houses a bench or two and a little shade. On either side is a topiary maze. It is often overgrown, but the kids don't mind since they like to sneak under the growth as much as running around within it.

I hope your day was as nice as ours!

During the winter months, even those months that don't quite feel like winter ~ people in DC can enjoy outdoor ice skating in the Sculpture Garden. When I took this it was a warm day of fifty degrees. That is a far cry from the weather we've had this week which has been below 30, with a real feel in the single digit range!

Here is another brightly painted Georgetown House, located on P street. It makes me think of Mint Ice cream. I no longer eat that sort of ice cream... all colored up to fool me into thinking it is really really good. Now my favorite mint ice cream is Chunky Mint Madness by Turtle Mountain... It's soy decadent and delish... and it doesn't need the green coloring to hook me;) YUMMMMMM.

Oh yeah, we were talking about houses... not ice cream... Brightly colored houses look like doll houses to me. I love the attention to detail at the roof, the door and the window frames. I never saw houses like this one growing up! =)

This picture was taken on a day in the upper seventies. Just down the street from this tree was a lemonade stand! Yesterday, it was 20 degrees. Today the high is supposed to be 54.

We got some snow yesterday. Actually, it fell for a few hours, but unfortunately it is melting. Still, we had a good time playing (pictures of that another day), building miniature snow creatures, and tossing the white stuff at each other. This picture was taken from the roof of my building, looking at Scott Circle.

It's not everyday a boy turns eleven!

On this day my baby did just that. He decided we should go to Target for his bday. And while this is not exactly a DC Daily shot.. it is a shot of the daily life of a DC kid. There are sadly, not many toy stores in our neighborhood. SOOO... in celebration of our son's eleventh birthday, we rented a Zip Car, drove on over to Target in Alexandria and he picked out a bday bionicle . It was everthing he wanted his birthday to be! We drove around a bit, then headed home to build said bionicle, while I made a special birthday cake. He had planned on dinner of veggy burgers and fries at Johnny Rockets, but our neighborhood joint was dirty and we decided not to bother. Instead we filled up (and boy, I mean filled up) at Chipotle near Dupont Circle. Then we headed home for that cake... did I mention how full I am?? Luckily I do have that cake pocket! **

On a side note, if you are ever in DC, or any of the other cities that make car sharing available... we highly recommend Zip Car. You can rent a car by the hour, day, or days. Cars are convenienly placed throughout the city and rental price includes gas, insurance and the car. It is very convenient.

This building is across the street from Lafayette Square which is across the street from the White House. I believe this is on 15th street, or Madison... it faces the park.
It was the shadows of that naked tree that caught my attention more than the building, which is why I have no more information to give you regarding it's location or purpose. I'm sure it has one.. actually, I'm sure it has both. ;)

This is one of the first bits of construction here in DC that prompted me to take note of just how much is being built up around me. I now stop to take notice of cranes, hard hats, dilapidated buildings... among other things ;)

It was a nice surprise to see this one in such a complete state. I hope to see it occupied soon!

This is a charter school. The students that go there get to explore their creative sides with their learning. It is near the Faragut North Metro stop. When we were just figuring our way around the neighborhood, we used it for direction. We leave the metro and walk toward the bright building when we want to go home. =)

I had to stop when I saw how the sun just lit up the last leaves that were still clinging to this little tree. It is on 15th street in front of a church between O & P streets. I took quite a few pictures. What I like about this one, besides the leaves themself, is the blurred lamp post that hints of city in the background.

It was a fabulous show and one which we highly recommend. I think we all wanted to run away with the circus after watching the performance!

I love this building. It is the National Museum of The American Indian . The building look smore like a cliff face than a museum. And I love the way they have used the landscaping around it by planting things to represent the earth. More on that another time.

I have no idea what the signifigance this crosswalk holds. It is located in DC on fourteenth street NW and R (I believe). We were out walking when they were creating this pattern. It was interesting to see, but unfortunately that was the time I forgot to bring my camera. We went back up to get a picture of the finished product to share with you here. Do you have any interesting crosswalks in your area?

One of the things I love about this country are the National Parks and, thankfully, DC is so close to many. This path in Turkey Run Park, is one of many found along the Patomac Heritage Trail.
