These little splashes of color can be found on R street NW right in front of Ross Elementary School. My kids don't go to this school, but we do enjoy their playground on occasion. I can't help but smile at these little gardens.

As a girl who was raised in southwest USA, I am always in awe of the tulips, daffodils and all the other bloomin' things around here. Each of the many cities in which we have lived have brought my attention to new and (to me) exciting things growing in the world at large. My daughter and I both stopped dead in our tracks to check out these bright little blossoms.

They just look like a little bit of sunshine to me!

These red doors are the entrance to a church on 15th & just past P Street. It might actually be on Church Street, now that I think of it. I spotted the two red tulips and had to get this picture!

While still cold and now rainy as wel here in DC. I did find a brief reprieve in the weather... or at least the impression of such in this picture. I was all bundled up while taking the shot, but looking at it now, it makes me feel spring-like...

To give you a bit of contrast, and a glimpse of the reality of this years winter weather, I am posting a shot of some blossoms from the week before the snow. This picture was taken on a day in the upper seventies. Just down the street from this tree was a lemonade stand! Yesterday, it was 20 degrees. Today the high is supposed to be 54.

This weekend we foolishly decided to head to the zoo. (Foolish because so very many others had made the same decision!)
Sunday was far too humid to make for an enjoyable day of animal gawking. We saw a few animals, and intend to go back some time before the official opening of the gates. They allow you to wander the zoo grounds as early as six in the morning. I think the animals might be more active then and the tourists will most definitely be less! ;)
This picture was a bonus. This flower is in direct contrast to how wilted I felt that day.

This tree stopped me in my tracks.

I enjoy watching the various stages of growth in all living things. I'm constantly pointing out buds, and new growth on trees... (possibly to the annoyance of those around me) This particular tree chose to blossom early. I spotted it the Tuesday prior to taking this picture. The kids and I walked by it on the way home from ballet class, or the park. It was unseasonably warm (although it seems unseasonable describes all of DC's weather, at least as long as we've lived here) . This blossom bloomed early, only to find itself stuck in a 'blizzard' the following weekend.

>>Now for a little history >> In 1912, Japan, as a gesture of friendship, gifted the district 3000 of these flowering trees. The city is blessed with an explosion of blossoms every April, hopefully to coincide with the National Cherry Blossom festival. The Japanese culture in the district has a chance to bloom then as well.
